First learning Node.js

We will learn another software today, Node.js. Another word that I came across many times when reading on information technology articles. First, let's take a look on what is Node.js. From the official site,

Node.js® is a platform built on Chrome's JavaScript runtime for easily building fast, scalable network applications. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices.

So this is very much to understand what exactly is Node.js from that two sentences but as you continue to read in this article, you will get some idea. If you have basic javascript coding experience, you will think Node.js is just a script that run goodies stuff on browsers to enhance people experience. But as javascript envolve, Node.js evolve into an application where you can code as a server application! We will see that later in a moment.

Okay, let's install Node.js. If you are using deb base linux distribution, for example debian or ubuntu. It is as easy as $ sudo apt-get install nodejs. Otherwise, you can download a copy from this official site and install it.

Let's start with a simple Node.js hello world. Very easy, create a helloworld.js and do the print. See below.

very simple, one liner produce the hello world output. You might ask, what can Node.js functionalities can I use other than console. Well, at the end of this article, I will give you the link so you can explore further. But in the meantime, I will show you how easy to create a web server using Node.js! Let's read the code below.

As you can read,  we create a file called server.js require a module called http. We pass an anonymous function into the function createServer of http module. The response will return http status 200 with a hello world. You can try to access in your browser with localhost:8888. Notice that the execution of the Node.js continue after http is created, unlike other language which will wait the execution finish before proceed the next line of code, Node.js execution will continue and this make Node.js asynchronous.

Light learning apache spark

A while back, I was reading articles and many articles referencing spark and in this week, hey, why not check out what actually is spark. Googling spark produced many results return and we are particularly interested in apache spark. Let us take a look today at apache stark and what is all about. From official spark github,

Spark is a fast and general cluster computing system for Big Data. It provides high-level APIs in Scala, Java, and Python, and an optimized engine that supports general computation graphs for data analysis. It also supports a rich set of higher-level tools including Spark SQL for SQL and DataFrames, MLlib for machine learning, GraphX for graph processing, and Spark Streaming for stream processing.
Okay, let's download a copy of spark to your local pc. You can download from this site.


extract the downloaded file and ran the command, not good.

Learning basic of cobertura

A while back, I was reading an article talk about code coverage and I googled, there is this opensource code coverage tool called cobertura. So naturally I thought to give it a try and the result was not disappoint. Read on to find out why. You might wondering why the name of cobertura, from the official site explanation.

"Cobertura" is the Spanish and Portuguese word for "coverage." We were trying to avoid acronyms and coffee references. It's not too hard to associate the word "cobertura" with the word "coverage," and it even has a bit of a zesty kick to it!

Okay, again, why would I want this as I have already junit running?

Cobertura is a free Java tool that calculates the percentage of code accessed by tests. It can be used to identify which parts of your Java program are lacking test coverage. It is based on jcoverage.

So cobertura is a auxiliary to the exiting test by showing how much of your test currently cover in your main codebase. So a requirement is such that, you need to have tests written before you use cobertura.

Okay, enough for the theory, let's dip toe into water. First, download the library, you can download from this link. Next, unzip this file and change into this library directory. There is a nice ready example for you to play with.

From the output, we see a target called instrument and then test was called. Then all the reports are generated. If you list the directory now, you should see a few additional files are added. cobertura.ser, reports, classes and instrumented. All the generated reports are in the reports directory. The one is relevant for this article cobertura and I will show you cobertura-html report.

Learning ActionScript with hello world

Today, we are going to learn ActionScript. First, what is ActionScript?

ActionScript is an object-oriented programming language originally developed by Macromedia Inc. (now dissolved into Adobe Systems). It is a derivation of HyperTalk, the scripting language for HyperCard.[2] It is a dialect of ECMAScript (meaning it is a superset of the syntax and semantics of the language more widely known as JavaScript).

ActionScript is used primarily for the development of websites and software targeting the Adobe Flash Player platform, used on Web pages in the form of embedded SWF files.

Okay, let's download adobe flex sdk, it is available here then extract the sdk to a file.

Let get into ActionScript hello world. Create a file HelloWorld.as

Now, let's compile the action script into swf. From where you extract the sdk, then you can follow the following steps. I make them easy as this is my first time doing flash development work. So I just put them into the sdk folder.

Apart from the compiler warning, a shockwave flash is generated. Now, you can render this through swf player or using html. A html is just as simple as the following.

Attempting to understand java garbage collect statistics

If you have been develop large java application, at times troubleshooting application can go as deep as looking into garbage collector when application is running. Unfortunately the statistics are just too much to begin to investigate into or trying to understand it. At least for me, it is pretty mundane and I seek your help too if you came across this article and please leave comment.

There are very few documentation describe how are these statistics should be interpreted. There is this from oracle blog which is dated year 2006, pretty outdated to be relevant but nonetheless, it analyze line by line. More recent article from alexy ragozin and poonam bajaj are worth to take a look too.

The gc statistics should be able to regenerate using these parameter to the java command line.  -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintPromotionFailure -XX:PrintFLSStatistics=1 , and the following are snippets extracted from a production machine. Let's take a look at them line by line.

We can summarize the statistics above with the following points.

* the statistics generated above is from java hotspot and the source code can be foudn here https://github.com/openjdk-mirror/jdk7u-hotspot/blob/master/src/share/vm/gc_implementation/concurrentMarkSweep/binaryTreeDictionary.cpp#L1098-L1112

* there are two statistics, before gc and after gc and this is not full gc.

* before gc, we notice the max chunk size is equal to the total free space, so we assume there is no usage.

* before gc, we also noticed that the total free space has 127053189 and max chunk size is 21404293

* after gc, cpu usage is spent on user 0.26 and real 0.03.

* after gc, from region usage 12% of the heap.

* after gc, concurrent mark sweep generation total of 11,763,712k whilst concurrent mark sweep permanent generation total is 40,954k and used only 24,563K

* total time this application stop were 0.0675660 seconds.

So we can guess that this gc snippet is good. it is not a full gc and usage does not increase to 100%. There is no failure/error appear anywhere. The total time stop is trivial too, less than a second.

Light learning using tsung on elasticsearch

Today, we will learn another software tool, Tsung. As this is just a introduction course, we will not go into details like interpret the statistics if it make sense. This is course plan to introduce how you quickly install, setup, test and show results using tsung. We want quickly acquaint distributed load testing using tsung. Let's first understand what tsung is.

Tsung is an open-source multi-protocol distributed load testing tool. It can be used to stress HTTP, WebDAV, SOAP, PostgreSQL, MySQL, LDAP and Jabber/XMPP servers. Tsung is a free software released under the GPLv2 license. That we like sir!

Okay, http is very common and let's pick elasticsearch 1.6.0 for this test. You can download elasticsearch from elastic.co , extract the content and just launch from command line. See below.

Now we are ready to do the load test, you can start tsung with the configuration descriptor. See below.

Learn what is python method mangling and variable mangling

While I was studying python, there are some unique word, mangling that caught my attention. There are two mangling, the method and the variable. But first, let's take a look what is mangling in python. From the official pep 8 documentation.

  If your class is intended to be subclassed, and you have attributes that you do not want subclasses to use, consider naming them with double leading underscores and no trailing underscores. This invokes Python's name mangling algorithm, where the name of the class is mangled into the attribute name. This helps avoid attribute name collisions should subclasses inadvertently contain attributes with the same name.

  Python mangles these names with the class name: if class Foo has an attribute named __a , it cannot be accessed by Foo.__a . (An insistent user could still gain access by calling Foo._Foo__a .) Generally, double leading underscores should be used only to avoid name conflicts with attributes in classes designed to be subclassed.

Okay, with that said and explained, let's hop into the code. We will create two class, parent and child class and both sharing the same method and same variable.

So with this, it should be clear that the attributes that live in the python object will prepend with an underscore and the class name with the variable. Same wise applicable to the method name too.
